Having completed our first match of the 25-26 season for all 3 senior men's and our colts, it's been a mixed bag.
The 1st team took on Telford Hornets at home, a team we beat at home last season but came up short away, nothing was taken for granted with that away loss fresh in our minds.
It was a solid start to the league campaign with a string of first half performances that set the tone for the day. Seven tries to none in the first 40 minutes showed the Castle dominance.
2nd half was a little scrappy with neither team getting a solid grip of the game. The opposition had a 10 minute spell where they managed 2 tries to wake us up to finish the match strong, with 2 tries and a conversion of our own to finish the game.
A very good result, a 47-10 home victory for Castle, but still areas to refine over the coming weeks to produce that full 80 mins performance we know that we're capable of.
Some outstanding play and contributions by all players, making it yet another headache for the coaches come selection for Saturdays home fixture against Crewe & Nantwich.
Try scorers being 2 from Dom Allerton, then a try each for Louis Dewsbury, Alex MacDonald, Will Vernon, Ollie Wain, Ollie James & of course Tom Heinrich on his 1st team debut! One conversion from Stelian Christian.
Congratulations to Man of the Match - Louis Dewsbury
The 2nd team travelled to local rivals Leek, which always promises to be an exciting fixture with both teams being promoted last season.
The fixture didn't disappoint with plenty of tries scored and some excellent rugby on display.
Although we are disappointed to start the season with a 56-26 loss, we knew Leek would be a hard place to visit and pick up the win. We came back with a bonus point thanks to the tries scored and plenty to work on this week ready for our first home game of the season on Saturday against Wolverhampton.
Try scorers being, Josh Morgan, Kev Edwards, Oliver Draisey & Jack Ward, along with 3 conversions from Luke Gross.
Congratulations to Man of the Match - Josh Welsh.
The 3rd team started off their season at home over on the Valley. We faced a tough Wednesbury team that did the double on us last season, a close fought game at home and a hammering away!
Match started with an early Wednesbury try in the opening minutes, but this only woke Castle up and finally we switched on. Defence was on point across the team, the lads fronted up and stopped the usual Wednesbury mauling tries, a scrum Wednesbury expected to dominate more than held it's own and the tries soon began to flow. Soon Castle were 22-5 up at half time.
Wednesbury managed to catch their breath and came out strong in the second half but Castle always had that little bit more heart and determination.
A magnificent performance resulted in a 29-19 win, a result that sent Wednesbury away from the pitch shocked, but graceful back in the bar.
Now it's up to Castle to carry this high into Saturday's local derby, away at Stoke 2s.
Try scorers being 2 from Chris Scrim, then a try each for Tom Alcock, Lewis Hill & Sam Blundell along with 2 conversions from George Root.
Congratulations to Man of the Match - Fin Turnbull.
Castle mixed Colts also had their first game of the season on Sunday, away at Liverpool St Helens.
After an outstanding season last year, winning the league having gone unbeaten all season, we knew this season is going to be tougher having a mix of U17s and U18s colts against mainly U18s teams.
Castle played with their usual grit and determination that coach Kev Edwards has instilled within his squad, but unfortunately came up short against a well drilled U18s colts team, succumbing to a 13-5 loss, but walking away with our heads held high in the usual Castle manner and back to training Tuesday to prepare for the next test at home against Preston Grasshoppers in a couple of weeks.
Up the Cas!
